Edmonton Teacher Dylan James Shott Charged with Sexual Offences, Banned from Contact with Minors Amid Police Investigation

An Edmonton high school teacher is facing multiple charges, including sexual assault and child luring, following allegations of misconduct involving a minor. Authorities have confirmed that the accused, Dylan James Shott, 32, was a teacher at M.E. LaZerte School but is no longer employed there.

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) revealed that they began their investigation after receiving a report from a girl last month. She alleged that the assaults occurred over approximately a year, between February 2024 and January 2025. While police confirmed that the alleged victim was not a student at the school where Shott was teaching, they have not disclosed her exact age.

Shott has been formally charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, child luring, and invitation to sexual touching. Following his arrest, he was released under strict conditions, including a prohibition on contacting individuals under the age of 16 and a ban from locations such as schools, daycares, and playgrounds. Additionally, he is not allowed to access dating websites or applications. These conditions aim to prevent any potential further harm while the legal proceedings unfold.

The case has raised concerns within the Edmonton school community, as parents and students are grappling with the seriousness of the allegations. Edmonton Public Schools has issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to student safety. "The safety and well-being of students is at the core of our commitment as a school division; it's a responsibility we take extremely seriously," said spokesperson Veronica Jubinville. The school division has assured the public that they are fully cooperating with law enforcement to support the investigation.

Shott’s professional background includes obtaining his first teaching certificate in Alberta in 2018. His role as a high school teacher put him in a position of trust and authority, making the allegations particularly concerning for the community. Parents have expressed shock and concern over the situation, with some calling for stricter vetting processes for educators to prevent similar cases in the future.

Authorities are urging anyone with additional information or potential complainants to come forward by contacting EPS or Crime Stoppers. Investigators are looking into whether there may be additional victims and are encouraging anyone with knowledge of similar incidents to speak up. The case remains under investigation, and further details may emerge as proceedings continue.
